이는 이란과 종전 협상 양해각서(MOU) 협상을 위해 이스라엘의 레바논 공습을 자제시켜온 미국의 기존 태도와는 달라진 것이다. 앞서 도널드 트럼프 미국 행정부는 종전 협상에 걸림돌이 될 수 있다는 이유로 이스라엘의 수도 베이루트 공습 확대를 반대해왔다. 미 온라인 매체 액시오스는 “미국은 최근 몇 주간 베이루트 공격 자제를 이스라엘에 촉구해 왔지만, 정부 관계자는 이러한 기조가 바뀔 수 있음을 내비쳤다”고 밝혔다.
미국의 변화는 교착 상태에 빠진 종전 협상을 이스라엘이 파고든 결과로 보인다. 이스라엘 i24뉴스는 “이러한 변화는 예히엘 라이터 주미 이스라엘 대사가 백악관에서 ‘이스라엘이 더 이상 현 수준의 공격을 감당할 수 없으며 군사 전략을 바꿔야 한다’고 전달한 이후 나타난 것”이라고 보도했다. ‘레바논 대표단이 상황의 심각성을 파악하지 못하고 있다’는 이스라엘의 주장도 미국을 설득했다고 이 매체는 전했다.
미국의 암묵적 승인 아래 이스라엘은 레바논에서의 진격 속도를 끌어올리고 있다. 베냐민 네타냐후 이스라엘 총리는 이날 오전 IDF에 베이루트 공습 재개를 지시했다. 이스라엘 카츠 이스라엘 국방장관은 SNS에 보포르성에 건 이스라엘 국기 사진을 공유했다.
